Cheese Advent calendar is coming back this Christmas – and you can buy it at Lidl and Morrisons

YOU can get your hands on another un-brie-lieveable advent calendar this Christmas.

The cheese advent calendar has been a hit in previous years and is returning in 2020 with Applewood and Red Leicester among the cheeses to look forward to.

Behind each of the 24 windows of the calendar lies one of nine different types of cheese, including Cheddar, Derby, Gloucester and Mexicana too.

You can use it to countdown the days right up until Christmas but sadly, there’s no bumper cheese for the big day itself.

The savoury take on the traditional chocolate-filled Christmas countdown comes with five new cheeses too.

You can pick up the calendar from Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Waitrose, Morrisons, Ocado, Booths, and Amazon from 1 November.

The calendar, which needs to be kept in the fridge, costs £8 which is the same price as last year.

It’s unlikely to be the cheapest way to buy cheese, but it’s certainly the most fun and as with most advent calendars, you’re paying for the novelty too.

Here are the different types of cheese you’ll find in this year’s cheese advent calendar for Christmas 2020.

  • Applewood
  • Applewood Vintage
  • Ilchester Derby with Sage
  • Ilchester Mature Cheddar
  • Ilchester Vintage Cheddar
  • Ilchester Double Gloucester
  • Ilchester Red Leicester
  • Ilchester Aged Red Leicester
  • Mexicana

The calendar was created by food blogger Annem Hobson, who writes about cheese and more on her blog So Wrong It’s Nom.

It first launched in 2017 and it’s popularity has spread among cheese lovers.

More than 700,000 of the calendars ahve been snapped up since then, and you can now get it at most of the major supermarkets.

Speaking about the popularity of the cheese advent calendar, its creator said: “Since I first made a handmade prototype, the Cheese Advent Calendar has reached goals I could only dream of.

“From outselling chocolate at major retailers, to continuing to retail in more and more countries each year.

“The response from fans – many of whom have followed since day one – has been phenomenal.”

This year’s calendar is more compact than last year’s making it better for the environment – and easier to fit in the fridge.

It has 81% less packaging but don’t fear, there’s still the same amount of cheese.

Cheese isn’t the only thing you’ll find instead of chocolate behind Christmas advent calendar windows these days.

Gin, makeup, socks and even Pringles are some of the novelty advent calendars on sale this year.
