The 2020 Disney Christmas advert has arrived, telling the heartwarming story of a grandmother’s relationship with her granddaughter and highlighting the beauty of family traditions during the festive season.
For many of us, Disney played a significant role in defining our childhoods. We watched in awe as Mulan fought with honour, wept as Simba left Mufasa’s side and felt empowered as Pocahontas championed peace.
The new Christmas advert released by Disney focuses on the theme of the love shared between family, taking a nostalgic look at the power childhood memories can continue to have in old age.
The short film, titled ‘From Our Family To Yours’, opens in the year 1940, when a young girl, called Lola, is given a Mickey Mouse toy by her father.
65 years later, the young girl, now a grandmother, shares the vintage toy with her granddaughter, who cuddles Mickey before helping her grandmother make star-shaped paper decorations for their home.
A few years later when Lola and her granddaughter are making the star decorations, one of Mickey’s ears tears slightly when their dog playfully tugs on some of the ribbon they’re using for their decorations.

As the granddaughter becomes a teenager and then an adult, she gradually becomes less interested in joining her grandmother for their annual artsy tradition, much to the elderly woman’s disappointment.
One day, the granddaughter comes home to find the Mickey Mouse toy discarded in the living room, the toy’s broken ear having completely fallen off after being dropped on the table in sadness by her grandmother.
After looking at the family photographs displayed in the home, including a black-and-white picture of Lola as a young girl cuddling her Mickey Mouse toy, the granddaughter decides to do something that will lift her grandmother’s spirits.

The next morning, when the grandmother comes down the stairs of her home, she’s shocked to discover the living room filled with different coloured star decorations, like the ones she and her granddaughter used to make together.
As Lola turns around in the room, captivated by the stars, she’s transported to her childhood, when the star-shaped decorations would hang in the streets.
But the best surprise of all comes at the end, when Lola opens a box given to her by her granddaughter, only to discover Mickey Mouse inside with his broken ear sewn back in place.
The pair share an emotional embrace, as the camera pans up to reveal the slogan: ‘From our family to yours.’

The short film is made even more emotional by the music it is set to, a beautiful rendition by 19-year-old singer Griff of the song Love Is A Compass, written by songwriting and production team Parkwild.
This year, the Disney Christmas advert is being released in support of Make-A-Wish, a charity that helps fulfil the wishes of children with critical illnesses.
The charity single Love Is A Song is available to buy and download from Monday 9 November, with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated to Make-A-Wish for every download made before 31 December 2020.

A limited-edition vintage Mickey Mouse toy, like the one owned by Lola in the advert, is also going on sale at The Disney Store and online at ShopDisney.co.uk, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Make-A-Wish organisations.
Furthermore, for every post shared on Facebook, Instagram of Twitter using the hashtag #LoveFromDisney and featuring a festive memory, Disney will also donate some money towards Make-A-Wish.
Griff said she was ‘excited’ to sing the song in the Disney Christmas advert, describing the lyrics of Love Is A Compass and the ‘storytelling’ of the campaign as ‘powerful’ and ‘important’.
‘The theme of family and loved ones are so front of mind for many of us – especially this Christmas,’ the Ivor Novello Rising Star nominee said.
Luciano Manzo, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish International, said that the charity’s 40-year partnership with Disney ‘has already helped grant so many wishes for children across the world’, adding that the organisation is ‘really excited’ by this Christmas campaign.
It took five months in total to complete the animation for the short film, which, aside from the Mickey Mouse toy, features five secret sightings of the famous animated mouse throughout.
