Outdoor Christmas Decorating Ideas for the Front Porch

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Does it feel like that where you are? It seems like everyone is decorating and shopping and prepping for the holidays earlier this year. And I don’t mind it at all.
The days are starting to get colder and I’m sure we’ll have our first snowfall very soon. It was time for me to decorate the exterior of our house for the holidays. I’m excited to work once again with Decors Veronneau and share outdoor Christmas decorating ideas for the front porch. Let me give you a tour!

Christmas Porch Decor Ideas

I love decorating the exterior of our home – even more so than decorating the interior! Your exterior Christmas decorations are not just for your family and guests. They’re for everyone and this year, I felt compelled to make the outside of our home look extra special. Neighbours, the dog walkers, the kids walking to school, cars just passing by… everyone could use a little extra Christmas cheer this year.

But where do you start to decorate? How do you make your porch look nice for the holidays?
I always start with a colour scheme. Browsing through the Decors Veronneau website, I was very drawn to their Country Christmas theme. I really wanted a lively, fresh look for the porch and this theme featured a lot of icy blues and whites and fun skiing motifs. I typically decorate the exterior with traditional red and green so this would be a nice change.

Christmas Front Door Decorations

I started by repainting our front door. The door had been a nice greenish grey but it always felt a little dark. I repainted the door using the leftover paint from our craft room. Blue Moon Bay by Behr is a fresh and vibrant ocean blue. The colour accentuates the panels on the door and helps it stand out behind the storm door. The new door colour pairs perfectly with the modern plaid outdoor rug I designed and the repainted porch floor. Just these few simple changes have the porch feeling updated and fresh.

I bought the snowshoes at an antique mall a few years ago. I love how the bright red bindings stand out. Red is a fantastic colour for the outdoors and really lends a Christmas feeling.

Here’s a closer look at the front door wreath. Did you catch my Instagram reel? I showed how to take a very simple wreath and embellish it in a few easy steps. This wreath has been dressed up with fresh clippings of cedar and huckleberry, clusters of frosted tip pinecones, and decorative wood skis. I finished it off with a red bow (I use wired ribbon for wreaths) and hung it on a wreath hook.

DIY Christmas Planter

What’s a Christmas porch without a pair of Christmas planters? These urns are a very fun and easy DIY. I follow the same 8 simple steps to creating a Christmas planter every year.
I like to have an organic, unstructured look to my urns and use greenery that has movement. This year’s urn consists of branches of Ontario pine, huckleberry, Leyland cypress, and Incense cedar.

The branches and sprays are what really make this arrangement come alive. I’m in love with the 36″ branch with pinecones. They lend height and structure, look so lifelike, and best of all, they can be reused year after year. The ivory waterproof berry spray adds brightness as do the birch ball ornaments. Finally, a blue bird ornament I’ve had for years and 14″ blue ice berry picks (currently sold out but see here for similar) continue the colour scheme.
The front door has come together nicely but there’s still more to see. Let’s have a look at the rest of the porch!

Christmas Front Porch Decorating Ideas

This is the most decorations I’ve ever had on the front porch – and I LOVE it!! I’ve decided to run with the country chalet theme and really invoke a cozy Christmas feeling.

It all starts with the trees. These trees are the perfect sizes for a porch display. The 6′ potted tree comes pre-lit and features 300 lights, 676 branches, and integrated red berry clusters. It comes with its own galvanized pot which makes the tree very sturdy and lends weight. We had a very windy day when I photographed this and there was no way that tree was toppling over!

Likewise, the 4′ potted tree also comes pre-lit and displayed in a galvanized pot. The tree has so many branches that it requires little decoration. A simple red bead garland was enough to tie the two trees together and give them a cohesive look.
The wood lanterns are ones I got from Decors Veronneau years ago and I’ve placed battery operated  flameless candles inside.

You can find skis, skates, and alpine style scattered throughout this display. The 30.5″ decorative skis (sold out, but this is similar) add interest to the brick wall. They’re large enough to be seen from the street which is something I consider when decorating the porch.

They’re echoed on the other side by a pair of 12″ painted wood plaques. Love the bright colours and retro graphics on these signs. Can you spot the vintage ski poles I’ve tucked beneath them for a touch of authenticity?

These galvanized metal pots are ones I used last year in my fireplace decor. Here I’ve displayed them filled with greenery branches and birch logs to add a rustic, natural feel.

Isn’t this the cutest tree print throw pillow? The simple pattern and black & cream colour really pops against the deep blue and red accessories. We normally have a bench here on our porch but I switched it out for dining chairs from our outdoor dining set. I have to say these pillows make these chairs especially inviting!

Finally, I’ve wrapped a few empty boxes in coordinating blue and woodgrain look wrapping paper and displayed them on a miniature sled. Repeating colours throughout your porch decor creates a cohesive and finished look.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour and it’s given you outdoor Christmas decorating ideas for your front porch. Now all I need is a dusting of snow to make this display complete. Be sure to check out Decors Veronneau for the products I’ve used in this space and for more Christmas inspiration.
