Retro Christmas Re Visited

Every year, my list of Christmas cards to make needs to include a few retro-themed designs.  I’ve always been a fan of the aluminum trees and tinsel and festive starbursts of the 1950s.  I can always count on Tim Holtz to come out with something that fits the bill.  Today’s project was made with the versatile Ornamental Birds die set from Sizzix/Tim Holtz.

It comes with lots of options for putting together fun, layered looks to create some holiday retro fun.

I first did my usual, die cutting everything at once in a couple of colors to see what I have to work with.  I’ll do this a lot with die sets with lots of layering pieces.  Then, I just move things around on a card panel to come up with a design.

Bright blue, red and white was the color theme I chose—retro all the way!  I heat embossed a sentiment from Tim Holtz’ Holiday Greetings set using white embossing powder onto a panel of blue cardstock.  I love how the white pops against that bright blue.

From there, I arranged ornaments and one of the birds using red and white cardstock and foam tape to pop everything up.  I added my panel to a white notecard trimming it down so it could fit up in the left-hand corner with a little bit of a border.

If you’re not sure how many die cuts to use on the panel, a good rule of thumb is to stick to the odd number rule.  I used five elements including the sentiment kind of cascading down.  This tends to be more pleasing to the eye.  Feel free to experiment to find what works for you.  This card looks quite simple, but it actually took me quite a few tries to get the arrangement that I liked.

I love the frosty look of the blue and white with the pop of red to pull everything together.

Thanks for joining me today!
